The day started well with rehearsals, refreshments, PSA tests where I bravely let them take an armful of blood (He squealed and winced like a big girl’s blouse. Ed.) and, as has already been mentioned, people bringing lots of lovely printer cartridges. Before the Festive Board we were treated to the Assistant Grand Master chatting to just about everyone in a very relaxed and informal manner, proving what a thoroughly nice chap he was.

The actual meeting was well run, as usual, with our ProvGM investing the worthy with their just rewards, dispensing collarettes, greeting this year’s influx of “New Boys” and, of course, entertaining us with his speech.

However, there were a couple of gasp-out-loud moments during the meeting. Many jaws dropped and hit the floor as they witnessed what then transpired.

Several Orders, Lodges and other Provinces kindly and generously presented our ProvGM with cheques and donations towards the 2019 Festival. Then Switzerland stepped up to the plate. They presented a cheque so large, so enormous, that some members had to rush out and have a stiff brandy. A much-deserved round of applause was given in recognition of this magnificent offering. Members were in awe as the Swiss Representative retook his seat. Everyone mentally promised themselves to eat more fondue and Toblerones in support of our Helvetian cousins.

Phew, it was all over and we could all get back to the business of the day. Or so we thought.

Two well-known brothers, who lead the SMART Team and the Mark Fundraisers, were not abashed or disconcerted in the least by the previous incident. Before our very eyes, these two colossi of fundraising strode manfully into the centre of the arena where they slowly unfurled a cheque the size of which caused paroxysms in some, swooning in others, and veins standing out on the foreheads of the rest of us (His hyperbole suggests he’s been on the blue Smarties again - Ed).

“By Jingo!” was heard from several people, hands were clapped so hard they had difficulty holding beer glasses later. Eventually order was restored and everyone went home just a little bit happier after a particularly exciting game of 'Heads and Tails'.
